As a teacher, I have a tendency to overprepare and to have too much material planned for a class. The beauty of face-to-face classes is that I can decide which materials or activities to leave out, based on what I realize about student abilities or interests. I can re-evaluate what I had planned on a lesson-by-lesson basis. Groups often move at a different pace through the exact same materials or activities depending on their language level, interest, or other factors.
When planning for an online course, especially one in which much of the course will be asynchronous, it's a whole new ball game. I need to predict how long it will take for the average student to complete asynchronous tasks so that I don't leave them with three times more work than they can cope with!
